The Rainbow
Children seem to be universally attracted to the mysterious beauty of the rainbow. The Almighty Creator God is revealed in the last book of the Bible as sitting on a throne with a rainbow encircling Him (Revelation 4). But nowhere do the Scriptures connect the rainbow to gender. In fact, the Bible reveals over and over the persistent theme that God created humankind male and female in his image - declaring that anything else is a certain deviation from divine design. Thus, the rainbow has nothing to do with ‘multiple genders.’ Rather, I would suggest that it speaks to God’s multi-faceted wisdom, grace, and goodness (the many colors); his unending love and persistent desire to enter into relationship with us (the circle); and his glory (the beauty and brightness). May we re-introduce the rainbow to children as a symbol of the perfections of a good Maker, who does not make mistakes in what he creates.
